The second of the Australian football codes kicks off in ten days. Australian Rules is my favourite sport, so that means I will probably come last (again).

Rules are the same as last year, with the exception of bonus points. 

- One point a correct pick, nothing for a loss.
- Default if you forget to pick, wooden spoon score.
- Tiebreaker will be HoF v Spoons. Largest margin wins, or if the margin is equal, total HoF count wins.
- Deadline will be the start of the first game each weekend- usually a Friday night, with the occasional Thursday.
- Late starters will start on the Wooden Spoon score.

I'll give it a try.

Someone has to tell me how HoF (Hall of Fame?) and Wooden Spoons factor in. As well as, are we picking teams or just scores, and is there a spread for the games?

Count me in.

BxB, the Hall of Fame goes to the person/s who get the most correct tips each week. The dreaded Wooden Spoon goes to whoever gets the least picks for that week.

It's a straightforward picking of the winning team for each game.

If I got that wrong I hope someone will come along and correct me.

Those numbers are used as a tie-breaker for dead-heats at the end of the season (a countback system) e.g. three players end up equal first

  • player A   7-3   (a +4 countback)
  • player B   8-4   (also a +4 countback)
  • player C   9-4   (a +5 countback)
    player C wins gold, player B silver and player A the bronze .. player B and player C were both +4 but B had more weekly wins. If the HoF vs. WS countback numbers are identical it's a tie.

    We pick teams, not scores .. spreads are ignored/not used. Most of us use spread numbers to help us pick the winner of a game; we need all the help we can get!

  • Firstly, a big welcome to our newest AFL tipsters- BxBarracuda, sky_beau, tezza1551and jonnowales. I hope you enjoy matching wits (or dartboards) with the old-timers. 

  • As a group, we exceeded 72% correct- an amazing number for the first round of a competition. Even the wooden spooners were over 62%. Out of 11 players, only three did not score a HoF or a spoon, but there is still a whole season in front of us.

  • As far as the footy goes, it already looks like Richmond and Melbourne will struggle. St Kilda held on in a nailbiter against the Swans, Collingwood surprised the Bulldogs, reigning premiers Geelong have carried on from last year, and Hawthorn could be on the rise again.

  • Sypher makes it 2/2 in HoFs, and tezza1551 does the same with spoons. Spoons also went to Howie72 and paper_aero. 

  • Other HoF awards went to BxBarracuda, ozfei and jonnowales. All up we hit 76% of all games!

  • Melbourne gave Collingwood a huge fright, only going down by the skinniest margin, Port snuck home against West Coast, and Geelong came from behind to sneak past Hawthorn. The Bulldogs and Saints both had comfortable wins, as did Sydney and Fremantle.

  • ozfei is determined to win this competition, and the way she is going, it will all be over by Round 10! A hat-trick of HoFs, including a perfect score, is a feat that is VERY hard to do. (George, do you know offhand whether this has happened before?) 

  • The rest of us were left in her wake, with srini701 getting his second spoon. 

  • Some interesting results from this round include Melbourne thumping Richmond, for probably their best winning margin for several years. Geelong showed that they cannot be written off with a cricket score against Port. Sworn enemies Collingwood and Carlton both had comfortable wins, as did the Sydney Swans. In one of the tougher games to predict, Brisbane got home against the inconsistent Doggies.

    It wasn't early on but Buck5ley last year made 3 successive HoFs and a perfect score.

    ElfTwinkle did it in 2008.

    ASA in 2007.

    In 2001 & 2003, gtho4 made 4 HoFs in a row but did not score a perfect round.

    If Ozfei gets a HoF from the next round, it is a record  She is only the fourth person to get 3 successive HoFs and a perfect score since 2001.

    The all-time record for any tipping comp is 5 consecutive weekly wins.

    Oh yes, should have clarified that the stats given by me above, are for the AFL tipping competition only. The stat George has given really is quite something...good luck trying to catch it Ozfei! Two to go.

    Five back-to-back weekly wins has been achieved 9 times by 8 different players over 10 years. 
    The elusive #6 was impossible .. all of them have crumbled under the pressure!

    I was very lucky with a couple of my picks this week. Almost had to resort to a coin toss for a few of them.

    I had every confidence that the Dees would come through for me against the Tigers.
    The big test will come when we play the Lions next weekend!

  • If your name is jonnowales you may feel a bit left out, as everybody else scored a HoF or a spoon.

  • ozfei bags her fourth straight and retains the lead. Two to go before we break out the champers. 

  • There were upsets galore with three winners not being tipped by any of us. This stat was not even balanced out by two perfect scores. In most rounds a 4/8 would usually get you a spoon; this week seven players graduated into the Hall of Fame with that score. Unbelievable! 

  • Port Adelaide beat St Kilda in a low-scoring armwrestle, the Kangaroos got home against the Hawks by two kicks, and Carlton had a great second half and belted the Premiers. Melbourne are showing a bit of form this year and they creamed the inconsistent Brisbane.

    Ozfei, that is already the best performance in the AFL competition since the inaugural competition in 2001! Four successive HoFs + 1 perfect round.

  • ozfei failed in her attempt to get five HoFs in a row, but is still in the lead. Ozzz2002 is now in outright second after he picked 7/8. Sypher got the same score and moved into equal third. The other HoF winner was srini701. 

  • At the other end of the spectrum, BxBarracuda grabbed another spoon. 

  • In the blockbuster match, a crowd of more than 80,000 saw Collingwood defeat Carlton, Sydney had a win against Brisbane and climbed to the top of the ladder, Geelong made mincemeat of Richmond, and St Kilda did a Houdini, winning on the last kick of the day.

  • Ozzz2002 picked 7/8 to jump into a share of the lead. He and ozfei have opened up a 5-point margin over the third placed tipster.

  • Sypher picked up another spoon and Howie72 also got one, taking his total to three.

  • St Kilda are feeling the loss of their injured full-forward, Nick Reiwoldt, losing three of their last four, and he may not be back for a few more weeks yet. Geelong are now flag favourites after walloping Brisbane at home, and Collingwood are now leading the comp. They beat Fremantle over in the west.

  • Ozfei scored her first spoon of the season and dropped off the lead by a point. Gtho4 also opened his account in the spoon department, leaving ozzz2002 on top of the ladder, and the only spoonless tipster.

  • BxBarracuda grabbed a HoF and is determined to catch up with the rest of the pack, andSypher got his fifth HoF gong. Howie72 also scored a 5/8..

  • There were a couple of crazy results this week. Fremantle broke a 10-year hoodoo to beat Sydney at home, Melbourne squeaked home against Port, and Hawthorn finally learned how to play footy, to smash the Blues.

  • Yet another week of upsets. Jointly, we had three perfect games, and three perfectly horrendous games. Essendon snuck in against the Doggies, Port Adelaide kicked their lowest score ever and got creamed by Richmond, whilst up in Queensland, Brisbane beat ladder leaders Collingwood.


  • The games that went according to script were Geelong over Melbourne, St Kilda crunching Adelaide and Fremantle doing the same to the Roos. Hawthorn beat Sydney in a nailbiter, and Carlton beat the Weagles.

  • ozfei rejoined the lead by picking up her umpteenth HoF. paper_aero and gtho4 also scored well. Howie72 scored spoon number 4.

  • Very little movement this week, also. ozzz2002 somehow managed to not pick a game, andozfei again goes up a point. Sypher and gtho4 also got spoons, whilst Howie72 was this week's only HoF'er.

  • St Kilda beat Geelong in the top of the table clash, and Collingwood beat Sydney. I was at that game, and almost froze solid. The fact that I was in the stands about 300 metres above the action may have caused that. Richmond have now won two on the trot and ruined everyone's tipping percentage. All the other games went as predicted by the pundits.

  • This was the penultimate round, and ozfei zigged where she should have zagged and dropped to third. gtho4 is now in clear second place and only one point behind a very nervous ozzz2002. srini701snared another spoon, but will need some extraordinary results to climb any higher than fourth.

  • This comp mirrors the AFL ladder with the top three teams already decided. Collingwood fell over the line against Adelaide, and St Kilda had a few anxious moments against a very tenacious Tigers outfit. Geelong accounted for Carlton, who will probably finish 8th, and just in the finals. Hawthorn had a cakewalk against another finals team, Fremantle. Sydney beat Bulldogs and despite beating West Coast, the Kangaroos will probably finish one game outside the final eight.

  • That was the end of the normal season of the AFL for 2010. Finals start next week, and I hope that St Kilda play better than they did this week! Geelong was the only one of the top three to win, with Collingwood also going down. Sydney, Fremantle, Hawthorn and Carlton occupy the bottom half of the final eight, and two of these teams will drop out next weekend. Collingwood plays the Doggies and St Kilda play Geelong. The two winners get the following week off. After that, it all gets very complicated.

  • ozfei had a great start to the season with 5 HoFs in the first seven weeks, however, she fell away towards the end and finished third. This is her first podium, but will probably not be the last.

  • gtho4 also got 7 HoF and just snuck into second. This is definitely NOT his first podium finish- he does it with monotonous regularity.

  • This year's winner is ozzz2002, and I cannot think of a more deserving recipient. smile A couple of lucky results in the last round helped.

  • Sypher topped the HoF tally with ten, and finished ahead ofpaper_aero in a countback.

  • srini701 also did well in the HoF department, but spoiled it all by also getting eight spoons. Howie72 got as high as fourth, and our sole American representative, BxBarracuda plugged on bravely. Hopefully he was not disillusioned by our silly sport and will be back in future comps!

    Congrats Ozz, great job running the competition. I'll be back for another season, my goal will be to break the century mark.

    Congratulations ozzz and gtho4.

    I tried to pick some upsets in the last round to make a late dash but unfortunately picked the wrong ones. crazy 

    Should be a great final series if all teams are firing.
